Congressman Dan Lungren (R-Gold River-CA) addressed Congress today on the issue of changing the crack cocaine sentencing laws --which he supports - to reflect a fairer treatment of the problem. Lungren gave the following speech in front of the House of Representatives: "I think this is tough but fair. I would not support going further. I support this bill very strongly. I believe that this is what justice should be about. This is a well-crafted bill a good compromise; it serves the ends of justice and fairness. "

Jul 31, 2010 - The quip: "Tough but fair" is an oxymoron. What do you mean?... Tough on blacks but fair to whites? You did not adequately address the disparity in sentencing. I think it is clear that the only reason you voted the 1986 bill was to target blacks specifically. This war on drugs has got to stop.
