15 years back Railway Children began its work with a strong conviction to stop the abuse of children living alone and at risk on the streets. Today we are an international development agency working in 4 countries across Asia, Africa and Europe that works with thousands of children and prevents them from being abused and / exploited. Since 1996, Railway Children has partnered with local organizations in India to change the lives of children who are alone and at risk in and around transport terminals. Railway Children strongly believes that early intervention is a crucial aspect of preventing children living on the street from any harm and reaching street children before an abuser can has been the vital element of our work. In India, Railway Children began its work in Gujarat in 1996 impacting the lives of 200 children. Today we are currently working in 9 states Bihar, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh helping impact the lives of more than 17000 children in a year. On March 24, 2010, CNBC TV18, Indias leading business channels featured the work of Railway Children in their show called Young Turks - Tranformers. We hope that this programme will help to highlight the vulnerabilities of children at and around transport terminals and inspire much needed action.
