02.06.12 (LAS CRUCES) -- Organizations providing food to people in southern New Mexico now have a way to give more. Volunteers with the Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico are making room for their new addition. "It's a very generous donation," said Nancy Flores, advisory board member for the organization. Walmart is giving the organization a new truck to help deliver more food into the community. "A lot of people don't understand how the distribution of food exist for food banks. Roadrunner Food Bank accepts very large donations from several corporate sponsors," she said. The food donations can pile up. Roadrunner Food Bank has been in Las Cruces for a year and in that time the group has distributed almost three million pounds of food through out four counties. "We will be able to pick up and distribute at least a million pounds extra food every year. We're not in the food storage business. We're in the food distribution and this increase our capacity to do this," said Nancy Barnes-Smith with the Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico. Walmart is committed to ending hunger. The company has a give year plan where it donates two billion dollars every year to food assistance programs. "When you consider that at least 40,000 people every year in the state of New Mexico have to access food assistance programs when we know that nationally one out of six people is hungry and 46 million people are living below the poverty line in the United States, which those numbers exceed what they were even 55 years ago so, the need is huge," she said. Last year Walmart gave 3.3 million pounds of food which equals 2.5 million meals to people in need. "It goes to what we are all about and that is number one we save people money so they can live better. This is truly helping people to live better and being part of the community with just a small token of our appreciation for our community and what we do out at the stores," said James Torres with Walmart.
