From: Russia Today Anonymous calls for anti-ACTA rallies, Poland suspends bill Published: 04 February, 2012, 13:07 A wolf in sheep's clothing -- that's how ACTA opponents have described the international copyright treaty. Thousands are to protest in Sweden on Saturday while in Poland the legislation has been suspended after attacks on government websites. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Friday that a wider discussion should be held before the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement comes into force. The talks should involve both Internet users and privacy protection agencies, Tusk added. Ratification of the document has been postponed pending the results of those talks. Meanwhile in Sweden, thousands of Internet users are expected to take to the streets of several major cities on Saturday. Over 11,000 have signed up to attend the rallies on a Facebook page promoted by the "hacktivist" group, Anonymous. Reports say similar demonstrations are set to take place in other countries across Europe, including the UK, France, Germany, Poland and other countries. The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement is a plurilateral agreement involving a number of countries including the US, Australia and Japan, as well as the European Union. The UK and 21 other EU member states signed the agreement on January 26. It now has to be ratified by the European Parliament and is scheduled to be debated in June. http://rt.com/news/acta-protest-sweden-poland-491/ ......................................................................................... Update: 29 January 2012 In days, our petition will be delivered to decision-makers in Brussels -- let's reach 2 million! Posted: 25 January 2012 Last week, 3 million of us beat back America's attack on our Internet! --- but there is an even bigger threat out there, and our global movement for freedom online is perfectly poised to kill it for good. ACTA - a global treaty - could allow corporations to censor the Internet. Negotiated in secret by a small number of rich countries and corporate powers, it would set up a shadowy new anti-counterfeiting body to allow private interests to police everything that we do online and impose massive penalties -- even prison sentences -- against people they say have harmed their business. https://secure.avaaz.org/en/eu_save_the_internet_spread/?slideshow ......................................................................... Say NO to ACTA Responsible department: Department for Business, Innovation and Skills ACTA is one more offensive against the sharing of culture on the Internet. ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement) is an agreement secretly negotiated by a small "club" of like-minded countries (39 countries, including the 27 of the European Union, the United States, Japan, etc). Negotiated instead of being democratically debated, ACTA bypasses parliaments and international organizations to dictate a repressive logic dictated by the entertainment industries. http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/20685 ........................................................................... This means that it will be impossible to run a service like Flickr or YouTube or Blogger, since hiring enough lawyers to ensure that the mountain of material uploaded every second isn't infringing will exceed any hope of profitability. * * That ISPs have to cut off the Internet access of accused copyright infringers or face liability. This means that your entire family could be denied to the internet -- and hence to civic participation, health information, education, communications, and their means of earning a living -- if one member is accused of copyright infringement, without access to a trial or counsel. http://www.petitiononline.com/stopacta/petition.html
