Starting next year, department stores, supermarkets and other retail stores can be registered as a part of the service industry. The Korean Intellectual Property Office said that it has revised the categorization system to allow these retailers to register their names as a service mark. Previously, because department stores and big supermarket chains were not admitted as a part of the service industry, when they wanted to register a service trade mark, they had to face the inconveniences of listing a multitude of different services and products. For example, department stores had to list all products that they do business with, stumbling across difficulties in filing for patents and managing service trade marks. From now on, they can use their retail business names for the service industry names, which is expected to enhance consumer convenience and stimulate patent filings.
