Aspiring professional musicians - Simple Question.... It's a weird question that can have a lot of different connotations to it when you ask some one to play simple, or play more simpler or even ask the question directly to many aspiring professional musicians: Do you know how to play simple? Way too many people answer yes to quick and do not have the ability at all. It sounds stupid, but its true. Playing Simple and playing simple well is not an easy task. If you are leaning toward being the session player, the substitute, the back up or the hired gun professional musician in the recording business, you need to have the reading skills, the chops and the technique in place but you also need to know how to reign it in to make the song work. When I drumming, 95 percent of what I was hired for was very simple, groove and embellishment playing. There were some of the albums that I got to stretch out on and have some fun, but the bulk of my career was playing for the song and most of the songs I played on called more for groove over chop. Playing simple as not only called for but when someone that can play busy, can pull it back to play simple for the part, you will build a reputation that you want to have. Now of course when a song called for some more technical stuff, I was happy to do it and it is always fun to go after much more challenging stuff, but at the same time, some of the simplest songs, at least to me, were a great challenge as well. Sometimes leaving the spaces can really allow for a groove to occur in a better way. Some great ideas for musicians that I share as a music consultant, are to really know the difference between having chops that use speed as a crutch or are really balanced and strong. Try taking that super busy lick, pattern, phrase or what not and slow it down to half speed or even slower. make sure you are proficient with the flurry as you are with the light sprinkling of chops. Like the rain comparison?
